On 30 October 2026, the Department of Philology released this year’s third issue of its scholarly journal, Acta Academiae Beregsasiensis, Philologica. The nearly 370-page issue features a total of sixteen studies and three reviews.
The studies cover a broad range of topics in linguistics and literary studies, with particular emphasis on onomastics, language contact, bilingual communication, metaphor studies, and second-language acquisition.
The studies focusing on Transcarpathia examine, among other topics, the characteristics of personal name usage in the 1921 Czechoslovak census, university students’ knowledge of Slavic loanwords, and cross-lingual communication in Transcarpathian secondary education. A separate article commemorates the 80th anniversary of the death of historian and linguist Antal Hodinka, highlighting the significance of his scholarly legacy and its subsequent reception in academic research.
Other linguistic contributions explore language norms in the media discourse of Ukrainians in Transylvania, metaphor usage in contemporary English-language advertising, the metaphorical structures of contemporary literary texts, and the linguistic and cultural interpretation of mythological motifs.
The literary studies address an equally diverse range of topics, including the translation of Ukrainian literature into Hungarian, a new Ukrainian translation of Gyula Illyés’s poem One Sentence on Tyranny, and a comparative analysis of the relationship between avant-garde art and political power. The issue also examines the narrative characteristics of contemporary Polish and American prose, as well as film adaptations of Emily Brontë’s novel Wuthering Heights.
The Reviews section introduces readers to three publications dealing with methodological issues in language policy research, linguistic playfulness in language acquisition, and Transcarpathian folklore.
