International Translation Day

On October 14, 2026, the Department of Philology at the University of Rakoczi organized a special program on the occasion of International Translation Day. The event focused on translation, interlingual mediation, and the significance of translators’ work.

For the occasion, the 4th-year students of English language and literature prepared an informative presentation that showcased the life and work of Saint Jerome. During the presentation, the students outlined the most important milestones in Jerome’s life, his ecclesiastical activities, and his role in the history of translation. Particular attention was paid to demonstrating how the figure of Saint Jerome is connected to the International Translation Day. The presentation not only described St. Jerome’s work as a translator, but also touched on the lesser-known and more controversial aspects of his life. Thus, the presentation provided a more nuanced picture of St. Jerome’s personality and work.

The program provided a good opportunity for students and those interested to learn more about one of the key figures in the history of translation and to gain insight into the important role translation has played in conveying religious, cultural, and scientific values.
