Educational and Cultural Excursion for Accounting and Finance Students as Part of Financial Literacy Week

On 7 October 2026, first-year bachelor’s students of the “Accounting and Taxation” and “Financial Security” educational programmes, together with lecturers from the Department of Accounting and Finance at Rakoczi University, took part in an off-campus educational and cultural excursion organised as part of Financial Literacy Week.

Organising such activities has become a valued tradition of the Department of Accounting and Finance, as they provide an opportunity to combine students’ professional training with learning about the historical and cultural heritage of the region.

The first stop was the Mihály Munkácsy Hungarian House in Mukachevo, an important cultural and artistic centre that combines historical, cultural, and educational functions. The participants were particularly interested in the history of the building, which had once served as a banking institution. This added professional relevance to the visit, allowing students to explore the links between the history of the financial system, the development of banking, and the city’s contemporary cultural life.

One of the main attractions of the Hungarian House is its unique bank vault, which is more than 100 years old. Inside the vault, authentic metal cabinets and safe structures from the Austro-Hungarian, Czechoslovak, Soviet, and Ukrainian periods have been preserved. They were once used to store important documents, funds, and other valuables. For the students, this provided a vivid example of how banking infrastructure and systems for safeguarding financial assets evolved across different historical periods.

During their visit to the Hungarian House, the participants also became acquainted with its cultural and artistic spaces, the activities of the institution, and the exhibitions on display. Particular attention was devoted to the renowned painter Mihály Munkácsy, whose name the institution bears and whose artistic legacy forms an important part of the cultural history of Mukachevo and Transcarpathia.

The second part of the programme included a visit to Palanok Castle, one of the best-known historical and architectural landmarks of Transcarpathia. The guided tour was conducted by Tímea Fazekas, a fourth-year student of the “Tourism” educational programme, and Anna Eszter Maliska, a second-year student of the same programme. They not only introduced the students to the architectural features and history of the fortress, but also helped them view its significance for the development of Mukachevo and Transcarpathia from a new perspective. Lesser-known facts, historical details, and engaging episodes from the castle’s past made the tour particularly interesting and informative.

We sincerely thank the Department of Geography and Tourism at Rakoczi University for supporting the guided tour at Palanok Castle, and Tímea Fazekas and Anna Eszter Maliska for delivering a professional, informative, and engaging tour.

Such activities are an important part of preparing future professionals, as they help students deepen their professional knowledge, broaden their horizons, better understand the connection between their future profession and the development of the region, and create opportunities for informal interaction between students and lecturers.
