The Veszprém City Mixed Choir (Veszprém Város Vegyeskara) was founded in 1956 under the direction of the distinguished conductor and Ferenc Liszt Prize laureate István Zambó. Since 1989, Ágnes Erdélyi has served as the choirmaster and artistic director of this “choral family”, which has gradually taken shape over the years. This esteemed musical community comprises the mixed choir currently marking its 70th anniversary along with the “Vocal” youth ensemble (established 24 years ago), the “Naspiv” folk ensemble (founded 10 years ago), and the “Seniors” group (active for 5 years).
Over the past decades, the choir has proudly represented distinctive Hungarian musical culture during numerous tours across Europe, including performances in Romania, Slovakia, Estonia, Finland, Denmark, Belgium, France, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Croatia, and North Macedonia. Meanwhile, the “Vocal” ensemble has also performed successfully in Japan. The centuries-old vocal and musical traditions of Veszprém’s choral community played a significant role in the city earning the honorary UNESCO title of “City of Music” ‒ a prestigious recognition of the artistic endeavors of successive generations and a testament to a deep commitment to the development of choral culture, both now and in the future.
The anniversary celebrations will span the period from September 25, 2026, to June 30, 2027. The Ferenc Rákóczi II Transcarpathian Hungarian University was invited to the grand opening (September 25–27, 2026), organized to mark the 70th anniversary of the mixed choir’s founding. Our university was represented at this prestigious event by Associate Professors Sofiya Chovriy and Ihor Zadorozhnyi from the Department of Pedagogy, Psychology, Primary, Pre-School Education and Management of Educational Institution.
The celebratory days were filled with meaningful professional and creative meetings, fruitful dialogue, and unforgettable, high-quality concerts.
As part of the program, the university representatives conveyed official greetings on behalf of the administration, faculty, and student body, and expressed their hope for the continued development of fruitful professional, creative, and friendly cooperation between the Ferenc Rákóczi II Transcarpathian Hungarian University and the Veszprém choir.
