Department of Philology

The Ferenc Rakoczi II Transcarpathian Hungarian University began its operation as an independent institution in 1996 under the name Transcarpathian Hungarian Teacher Training College. The institution has borne the name of Ferenc Rakoczi II since 2003. The Department of Philology is one of the institution’s oldest units, established in 1998 as the Department of Linguistics. The department was responsible for teaching Hungarian, English, Ukrainian, German, and French across all of the institution’s programs. English teacher training has been available at the University of Rakoczi since its foundation, while Hungarian and Ukrainian teacher training programs were launched in 2004 (in major pairings, according to the options available at the time). Between 2004 and 2012, the Department was the graduating department for major pairings such as Hungarian-English, Hungarian-Ukrainian, Hungarian-History, English-Hungarian, English-History, and Ukrainian-Hungarian.

Since 2012, the Department has been training teachers in bachelor’s (BA) programs for Hungarian Language and Literature, Ukrainian Language and Literature, and English Language and Literature. The master’s (MA) level has been available in the Department’s offerings since 2017. MA programs have been running in certified Hungarian Language and Literature, and certified Ukrainian Language and Literature since 2017, and in certified English Language and Literature since 2019. Since 2022, the department’s offerings have been expanded with a bachelor’s program for German Language and Literature teachers.

In the 2024-25 academic year, the Department of Philology launched three new bachelor’s level programs: Philology. English–Hungarian Translator and Interpreter, Philology. English–German Translator and Interpreter, and Philology. Ukrainian–Hungarian Translator and Interpreter.

Between 2004 and 2006, in line with the expansion of the educational portfolio, the Hungarian, Ukrainian and English Branches were created as subunits within the Department of Linguistics. The Department has been operating under the name Department of Philology since 2005. In January 2023, the Campus that houses the department was named after the founding head of the department, István Kótyuk.

In the 2023-2024 academic year, our department supervises seven study programs as a graduating department, which are available in both full-time and correspondence formats. The total number of students in the Department of Philology is 416, of whom 213 are full-time students (167 in bachelor’s and 46 in master’s programs) and 203 are correspondence students (178 in bachelor’s and 25 in master’s programs).

In the 2024-2025 academic year, our department supervises nine study programs as a graduating department, of which 6 are available in full-time and correspondence formats, and 3 in full-time format only. The total number of students in the Department of Philology is 501, with 379 in bachelor’s programs and 74 in master’s programs.

Starting from the 2022-23 academic year, the Department of Philology of the Ferenc Rakoczi II Transcarpathian Hungarian University, in cooperation with the University of Miskolc, has launched double degree programs. The Department of Philology, jointly with the University of Miskolc, has announced admissions for four programs: Hungarian Language and Literature (BA), English Language and Literature (BA), German Language and Literature (BA), and Hungarian Philology (MA). Students applying for the double degree programs study at the University of Miskolc in parallel with their studies at the University of Rakoczi. There are 48 students studying in the joint double degree program with the University of Miskolc.
