Financial Literacy in the Context of the Cultural Heritage of Transcarpathia: An Excursion for Accounting and Finance Students
On October 29, 2025, first-year undergraduate students (educational programs “Accounting and Taxation” and “Financial Protection”) and lecturers of the Department of Accounting and Auditing at the Ferenc Rákóczi II Transcarpathian Hungarian University (University of Rákóczi) went on an educational excursion organized as part of Financial Literacy Week. This event became an important and interesting experience for the students, as it not only allowed them to familiarize themselves with the historical landmarks of Transcarpathia but also contributed to a better understanding of financial literacy through learning about the history of money and its circulation.
The first stop on the tour was the Munkácsy Mihály Hungarian House in Mukachevo, a cultural center located in the building of the former Austro-Hungarian bank, built in 1910. There is a unique safe that is over 100 years old, as well as antique cabinets from different historical periods that were used to store important documents and valuables. An impressive map of the Austro-Hungarian Empire adorning the ceiling, as well as an art gallery and a numismatic museum, complement the historical atmosphere of the building.
The second part of the tour was Palanok Castle (Mukachevo Castle). This is an architectural gem located at an altitude of 68 meters on a dormant volcano. The castle has a rich historical context, as the exact date of its foundation has not yet been determined, although it is mentioned in documents since the 11th century. Particularly fascinating are the secret underground passages, which were used as shelter for people and livestock in times of danger. These passages have survived to this day, giving the castle a unique character.
The excursion was led by Boglárka Gerő, a graduate of the “Tourism” educational program at University of Rákóczi, and Tetiana Komonyi, a fourth-year undergraduate student of the same program. They made the tour not only informative but also extremely captivating, offering detailed insights into the history of the castle, its architectural features, and its role in the development of the region.
We would like to sincerely thank the organizers for the engaging and informative journey that revealed new chapters of the local history to the participants. Special thanks to the Department of Geography and Tourism at University of Rákóczi for their assistance in organizing the event, and to Boglárka Gerő and Tetiana Komonyi for their professionalism, enthusiasm, and captivating stories that made the excursion unforgettable and meaningful for all participants.
Such cultural activities are highly significant for students as they allow them to combine theoretical knowledge with practical experience and gain a deeper understanding of the importance of history and culture in an economic context. These activities foster a broader worldview and help students better understand the interconnections between different fields of activity, which is an important aspect of their professional development.
