Developing Security Thinking: A Training Session by Professor Oleksandra Liashenko for the Students of the Department of Accounting and Auditing

On 19 November 2025, the Department of Accounting and Auditing at University of Rákóczi hosted an insightful and inspiring guest session delivered by Professor Oleksandra Mykolaivna Liashenko, Doctor of Science in Economics and Professor at the Department of Management of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University, a distinguished expert in security management, strategic thinking, and crisis management. The participants of the event were students of the educational programmes “Financial Security,” “Financial Protection,” and “Accounting and Taxation”.

The meeting began with a presentation of Professor Liashenko’s book “In the Ring of Fire: Defence of Luhansk Airport”, which documents the heroic defence of the Luhansk airfield in 2014. The publication combines documentary evidence, personal stories of military men, analytical materials on defence tactics and strategies, and profound emotional reflections on the meaning of protecting the state in today’s challenges.

A particularly moving moment was the remembrance of Mykhailo Tymoshchuk, a graduate of the Ferenc Rákóczi II Transcarpathian Hungarian Institute, who was killed while defending Luhansk airport. This detail gave the meeting a deeply personal resonance and highlighted how closely the themes of security and resilience are connected to our academic community.

Following the presentation, Professor Oleksandra Liashenko conducted a practical training session focused on cultivating security-oriented thinking and developing strategic vision in the field of financial protection. During the workshop, students worked in teams, analysing real risks and threats; built their own risk maps to identify areas of vulnerability in personal finances; developed a set of protective actions that together form an individual “financial shield”; and discussed the role of security thinking in decision-making under uncertainty.

The training fostered the development of critical thinking, teamwork skills, strategic forecasting, and a responsible attitude toward personal and professional safety. Summarising the event, students emphasised the importance of gaining experience in new teams and dynamic environments; improving public speaking and idea-presentation skills; rethinking the concept of security in the context of the modern world – from the individual to the national and financial levels; and understanding the importance of building one’s own “financial shield” to withstand risks.

Students’ Feedback

“The meeting with Professor Oleksandra Liashenko was an extremely valuable experience for the students of our university. She presented her book and shared her professional perspective on financial security, after which she engaged everyone in active participation. Professor Liashenko initiated an important discussion about what the word ‘protection’ means to each of us, especially in the context of finance. The group work was particularly valuable. Each team sought possible ways to respond to current threats and developed concrete solutions that they later presented. This format allowed us not only to deepen theoretical knowledge but also to develop teamwork skills. This experience is crucial for our professional growth and the formation of modern financial thinking.”

“The training on financial security was very engaging and educational. I especially enjoyed creating the ‘shield,’ where we actively developed teamwork skills and worked toward a common understanding of threats and solutions. Many thanks to Prof. Oleksandra Liashenko for coming and conducting this training for us. I hope this was not the last one.”

 Andrii Balog,
4th-year student, Educational Programme “Financial Security”

“The training left a pleasant impression. The information was presented in an accessible way, and the practical tasks helped to better understand the material and deepen my knowledge about the financial security of enterprises. I would especially like to highlight the practical task in which we had to identify risk factors and propose solutions. I express my gratitude to Prof. Oleksandra Liashenko for the useful training.”
