“Accounting is more than numbers”: The Rákóczi University celebrated International Accountant’s Day
On November 11, 2025, the Ferenc Rákóczi II Transcarpathian Hungarian University (Rákóczi University) hosted the traditional career orientation event dedicated to International Accountant’s Day. The event was organized by the Department of Accounting and Auditing of Rákóczi University and the “Accounting and Taxation” cycle commission of the Vocational College of Rákóczi University.
This event has been held for the eighth consecutive year and unites students from various educational levels: bachelor’s students of the “Accounting and Taxation” and “Financial Security” programs, master’s students of the “International Accounting and Taxation” program, and accounting students pursuing vocational pre-higher education.
This year, the event took place as part of the Hungarian Science Days, which were held under the slogan “200 years at the service of knowledge and society”. Thus, the celebration of the professional day naturally complemented the university’s scientific and educational initiatives.
The event was officially opened by the Vice-Rector of Rákóczi University, Dr. Sakal Imre. He emphasized the important role of accountants in modern society:
“The accounting profession is one of the few that leaves its mark not only in numbers but also in the stability of entire organizations. It requires precision, honesty, and the ability to adapt to changes. A modern accountant is a strategist, an analyst, and a guarantor of financial transparency.”
The Director of the Vocational College Dr. Soos Katalin wished the attendees inspiration and a deeper understanding of their professional role:
“We want our students not only to know accounting but to feel pride in their chosen profession. Today, they have a unique opportunity to hear the experiences of those who have already realized themselves in this field and see how wide and promising the path ahead of them is.”
The event’s program consisted of two parts — an informative and interactive session, and a career orientation session. First, the student moderators presented the history of the accounting profession, starting from the earliest mentions in Mesopotamia and ending with modern trends in digital transformation of accounting. This approach allowed the participants to understand the significance of the profession not only as a technical skill but also as a socially important one.
Next, participants took part in an interactive quiz on the online platform Kahoot!, which added an element of competition, ease, and increased emotional involvement for all attendees. During the game, a friendly atmosphere prevailed, fostering both a review of the material and informal communication among students from different educational levels.
The most anticipated part of the event was the meeting with professionals — stakeholders who shared their experiences working in accounting and finance. The theme of the conversation was “Women in Business.” Among the invited guests were: Devjatko Ljudmila, Chief Accountant at “Bereh TV” LLC; Bak Marta, Chief Accountant at the “Transcarpathian Center for Development and Consultation ADVANCE'” Charity Fund; and Tarasova Ilona, entrepreneur, founder, and owner of the “Parisel” pastry restaurant. The speakers talked about the peculiarities of daily work, new challenges, digital tools, the importance of professional ethics, and continuous learning. The conversation was conducted in an open dialogue format and was accompanied by real-life case studies, making it even more valuable for the students.
Among the guests were also students from the Transcarpathian Hungarian Lyceum and the Ede Egan Vocational Education Center. This multi-level format significantly enhances the career orientation impact of the event, allowing even high school students to feel part of the academic community at an early stage of their studies.
The Senior Lecturer of the Department of Accounting and Auditing, Pataki Gabor noted: “Such meetings allow students to see that behind every report, formula, and balance, there is a real person. It is precisely the humanity, alongside knowledge, that makes an accountant a strong professional.”
The Deputy Head of the Department Dr. Loskorikh Gabriella added: “Our goal is not only to provide quality knowledge but also to create a space where future leaders of accounting and financial fields are shaped. Participation in such events helps future professionals step confidently into their careers, understand the requirements of the modern economic environment, and develop critical thinking necessary to successfully overcome professional challenges.”
The Head of the Department of Accounting and Auditing Prof. Dr. Bacho Robert solemnly concluded the event, summarizing: “The accounting profession has always been important, and today it is becoming even more strategic. Our students acquire not only theoretical knowledge but also practical skills necessary for a successful career in finance and accounting. This was an excellent event, and I am confident that it became another step on your path to professional growth.”
The event concluded in a relaxed atmosphere of sharing impressions, taking group photos as a memento, and mutual motivation for future achievements. The accounting profession was presented not as a routine task but as a space for development, stability, strategic thinking, and leadership.
