History of the Department
At the time of the establishment of the Ferenc Rákóczi II Transcarpathian Hungarian College of Higher Education, the teaching of mathematics and informatics for the institution’s students was provided by the staff of the mathematics section within the Department of Natural Sciences. In the 2004/2005 academic year, the first cohort of the “Mathematics” program was launched. The Department of Mathematics separated from the Department of Natural Sciences in 2006 and became an independent unit. In the 2009/2010 academic year, the “Specialist” level training began.
Since 2022, the department has offered a new specialization called “Secondary Education (Informatics),” created in response to the high demand from Hungarian-language schools in the region. This specialization was established to meet the needs of training informatics teachers, ensuring high-quality education and the integration of modern information technologies into school teaching.
The Department of Mathematics and Informatics at the Ferenc Rákóczi II Transcarpathian Hungarian College of Higher Education has taken another significant step toward strengthening international cooperation. Starting in 2025, the department launched a double degree program in collaboration with the Faculty of Informatics of Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE). Within this framework, students can participate in the “Software Information Technology” (evening program) training. The joint program provides students with the opportunity to obtain degrees simultaneously from Rákóczi College and ELTE, thereby enriching them with competitive knowledge and international experience. This cooperation contributes to the professional development of Hungarian youth in Transcarpathia and enhances their labor market prospects.
The department’s tasks include addressing theoretical and practical issues of modern mathematics and informatics, developing effective teaching methods, and ensuring overall progress in the fundamental aspects of these subjects. The department offers degree programs in “Secondary Education (Mathematics)” (Bachelor’s and Master’s levels) and “Secondary Education (Informatics)” (Bachelor’s level). Students specializing in “Secondary Education (Informatics)” study modern programming languages and acquire fundamental knowledge in web programming, enabling them to remain competitive in the labor market and adapt to rapid changes in the field of informatics.
The lecturers of the department provide education not only for mathematics and informatics majors but also for students of other programs at the College, teaching them informatics and mathematics. The Department of Mathematics and Informatics has three specialized classrooms for mathematics and three for informatics. Independently of the department, but with the support of its staff, the Tivadar Puskás Informatics Center operates.
